A few weeks ago, I noticed a proliferation of purple
flowers growing in areas where there were none in previous
years. My wife told me that they were purple loosestrife, an invasive species
that was first introduced into North America in the early 1800s for ornamental and medicinal purposes.
Other invasive
species that have made the news in the last few years
are the Chinese
mitten crab, snakeheads, taxifolia and cane toads.
