Microsoft® Announces
Successor to Windows® XP Operating System
Microsoft has announced that the long
promised sequel to the Windows XP operating system will
be available in 2006. By 3 August 2005 developers and
beta testers will have an opportunity to try out the
Beta 1 version of the new OS.
Formerly known by the code name "Longhorn,"
the new OS is officially known as Windows Vista.™ According
to the official
announcement, Vista, "...introduces clear ways
to organize and use information the way you want to
use it. It seamlessly connects you to information, people,
and devices that help you get the most out of life."
Microsoft reports that the name was
suggested by the improved clarity that the new OS will
bring to stored folders and files.
Because Microsoft XP is so widely used
and has many security holes, XP has been the target
of countless virus launchers and hacker attackers. Properly
updated versions of XP are cloaked in a patchwork quilt
of numerous security patches and fixes that require
frequent updates by its users. At least XP remains far
more stable than Windows 98 and, especially, Windows
Millennium. Presumably Vista, which is supposed to be
much more secure than XP, will be at least as stable
as XP.
