| Snow in Hawaii
Derek Chignell, Ph.D.
These spectacular photos of the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea were taken by Dr. Derek Chignell of the University of the Nations in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in mid-January 2005.
The twin domes in the first photo comprise the Keck Observatory. The Japanese Subaru Observatory is at left. The observatory at right is NASA's InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF).
The second photo shows the moon hanging in the frozen sky over the snow-covered summit of Mauna Loa.
Dr. Chignell was for many years the chair of the Chemistry Department at Wheaton
College. He and The Citizen Scientist editor
Forrest M. Mims
III have taken many students from the University
of the Nations on field trips to both Mauna Kea and
Mauna Loa.
