29 October 2004 Mount St. Helens from space
Dianna Hrabovsky's "Eye on the Sky" column in this issue of The Citizen Scientist is about volcanoes, including Mount St. Helens. The recent activity at this huge volcano has generated considerable interest among scientists and members of the general public, especially amateur volcanologists. Dianna's column has some dramatic ground views of the volcano's gaping crater. The aerial photograph shown here was recently released by NASA's Earth Observatory web site. The photograph was made by astronauts on the International Space Station on 13 October 2004 using a Kodak 760C digital camera fitted with a 400 mm lens. Many additional photographs taken by astronauts and cosmonauts
are available at NASA's The
Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. |
