LABRats Receives $150,000 Grant

Shawn Carlson, Ph.D., Founder and Director of the Society for Amateur Scientists

This is a great day for science literacy. A generous Bostonian businessman who understands LABRats' true potential has given our program $150,000!

SAS Member Brian Chapel Lands a Research Position

Brian Chapel of Victoria, British Columbia, is an active member of the Society for Amateur Scientists (SAS) who has long been interested in a full time science position.

Citizen Science Comes of Age

Science writer Chandra Shekhar has written a nicely crafted article about citizen science for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. In "Citizen science comes of age" (4 December 2006), Shekhar begins by asking, "Who says you need a Ph.D. to do science?"

Geology Update from Hawaii's Mauna Loa

A previous news article in The Citizen Scientist described the work of geologists Julie Herrick and Erika Ronchin high on the slopes of Hawaii's Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano

Wanted: Contributions to The Citizen Scientist

The Citizen Scientist aims to be the best possible source of information, news and projects for amateur scientists. We are looking for contributors to help us reach this goal. Our staff is part time and tiny, so we are unable to engage in lengthy corres- pondence about your sub- missions. But we will do our best to publish your best. Please scan what follows. Maybe you can help us advance the cause of citizen science! More.

Updated 23 December 2005

Shawn Carlson listens as students Dina Evangelism and Andrew Dow explain at an SAS meeting how they discovered that calcite crystals grow in a fractal pattern. Dr. Carlson, a physicist and MacArthur Fellow, is the creator of LABRats.
