Nannothemis bella

Denise D. Greaves, Ph.D.

On the afternoon of 11 June of this year, I ventured over to Browning Mill Pond in the Arcadia Management Area here in Rhode Island. Just east of the pond is a fish hatchery, which has a lot of boggy areas that attract bog-loving dragonflies such as Nannothemis bella (elfin skimmer)

The First Scientific American: Benjamin Franklin And the Pursuit of Genius

Justin McHenry, Research Director for IndexCreditCards.com

I've always been a Benjamin Franklin fan, but I guess I've always admired the caricature of Franklin: from the rags-to-riches Poor Richard writing witty sayings in his almanacs to the benevolent old founding father who charmed the ladies in France.

Society for Amateur Scientists Holds 2006 Meeting

John Powell Receives the 2006 Benjamin Franklin Citizen Scientist Award

Report from the Fourth National Citizen Science Conference

This Week at Hilton Pond

Bill Hilton Jr.

Executive Director
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History
York, South Carolina 29745 USA

Little did we know when we upgraded the old farmhouse at Hilton Pond by installing vinyl siding that we would create a paradise for web-spinning spiders of all sorts and sizes.

Remembering Steve Irwin

E. Norbert Smith, Ph.D.
Email: DocGater@aol.com, Website: www.NorbertSmith.com

The scientific community has suffered a great loss with the passing of Steve Irwin, and I have lost a kindred spirit. In many ways Steve was to wildlife what Isaac Asimov was to science. Although trained as a biochemist, Asimov is best remembered for popularizing science by  his many excellent fiction and non-fiction books and articles.

How to do Theory as an Amateur

George E. Hrabovsky, President MAST

The following was presented at the Poster Session of the 2006 meeting of the Society for Amateur Scientists. Editor.

What Does A Theorist Do?

A theorist attempts to find patterns in data, then assuming such a pattern to be real, creates mathematical or computational models to predict outcomes that can be tested experimentally or observationally.

Chris Smolinski of Black Cat Systems has an interesting web page devoted to detecting nuclear radiation with Black Cat Systems GM-10 and GM-45 geiger counter radiation detectors. He has kindly allowed The Citizen Scientist to publish this article adapted from his web page and based on some of his experiments. Editor.

Algorithms for Mental Conversion between the Fahrenheit and Celsius Scales

Robert A. Warren

Yes, quick mental conversions can be made between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales, using the algorithms presented in this paper. But before these algorithms are presented, some background material is needed. More.
