Doing Poster Sessions
What is a Poster Session?
Many conferences today feature a poster session
where presenters can display their work using text and graphics
in a visually-pleasing presentation. A "poster session"
(a collection of posters) can take place in one large room, several
smaller rooms, or even on a balcony. As viewers walk by your poster
quickly and efficiently communicates your research. Unlike a slide
show or verbal presentation, a poster session lets viewers study
and restudy your information. Posters are also a good way for someone
who cannot attend a conference to make a presentation by sending
a poster.
Making a Poster
There are many excellent web sites describing how
to make a good poster session. We strongly recommend the four-page
guide The Poster Session: A Guide for Preparation written
by Carol Waite Connor and released to the public domain by the US
Geological Survey. Click here to download
the guide as a .pdf file.
Dimensions, Displays, and Mounting
Posters appearing in SAS Conferences should be able
to fit on a 3-foot by 4-foot poster board. The components of the
poster will usually be printed on 8.5" x 11" pages, or
smaller, and arranged on the poster. Posters can be displayed on an easel or table, hung on a heavy curtain, or affixed to a wall with hanging wires or double-sided tape.
Sending Your Poster to the Conference
There are two ways to get your poster to the Conference.
The first is to have it printed out on a 3' x 4' sheet of paper
and transported in a mailing tube. The second method is to bring
or mail the individual printed components to the Conference, and
mount them on a poster board upon arrival. If you cannot be present
at the Conference, you must include detailed instructions on where
everything should reside on the poster. A diagram is mandatory.
Returning Posters
If you cannot attend the Conference but are sending
a poster, we cannot return posters to you unless you make specific
arrangements with us.
