New Feature: Gallery
Gallery is a new feature of the E-Bulletin. SAS members and friends are encouraged to submit for our consideration interesting photographs of interest to amateur scientists. Send original digital images, with brief caption information, to forrest.mims@ieee.org. When a photograph shows a living organism or fossil, please provide the scientific name to at least the genus level if possible. We are unable to use photographs that depict unsafe practices or are otherwise inappropriate for a general web site.
Because many amateur astronomers capture outstanding images of the night sky, the first two Gallery images are designed to attract the interest of some of these outstanding astrophotographers.

Winter is a good time to photograph and study condensation trails (contrails), the artificial clouds that are produced by high-flying aircraft when the air is slightly moist. Contrails can sometimes greatly increase in size and even reduce sunlight. Click images to enlarge. |
Contrails sometimes evolve into cirrus clouds, but the reverse never happens. This cirrus cloud is not a contrail. |
