Sound Amplitude and Loudness

John,

Interesting:
After years of adjusting audio levels and measuring them in dB, I have always considered a 6 dB increase as twice as loud. Never gave it much thought until now. One thing though, a 3 dB increase can be noticed but it really is not a dramatic increase so someone would not be expected to call this twice as loud. I seem to rememeber that 1 dB is about the minimum someone can notice as an increase. The minimum detectable increase level might be worth experimenting with also. It would also be interesting to compare some other senses. Like how do we preceive twice as bright light or twice as heavy.

The "dynamic range of hearing": from the threshold of detection to pain and distortion is more like 10^13 rather than 10^10.

SAS Members in the UK?

Hi, do you have many members in the UK that I could contact about the SAS?

Specifically, within the SAS do you have any members who are interested in Entomology especially Mosquitoes?

Any info will be appreciated.
