12 September 2003 E-Bulletin Backscatter E-Bulletin Forum on Wind Power The AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) has a discussion mailing list on Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/awea-wind-home. Its primary focus is small wind energy such as a home or farm unit. But all aspect are discussed. I would suggest Jim Simmonds join this forum or at least read the archives. Jim Hannon
Radiation Detector Kits? Hi: I am trying to locate a manufacturer of radiation detector kits using a CdZnTe solid state detector. At one time, such a kit was available; there was an article in Popular Electronics on it. I have lost all track of this article! Any help on rad kits would be nice!
Washington Monument Experiment Hi, Shawn mentioned a measurement of the earth radius by watching sunset from the top and bottom of a cliff, and noting the difference in time of sunset (Editor's note: see Doug Strain's article, "On a Method to Measure the Size of the Earth"). This could be done at the Washington Monument. My quick calculation has the time difference between two and three minutes, so it should be easy to get a decent measurement. We can send (the younger) half of the gang up the monument counting stairs to estimate the height. For timing, maybe set up a large clock, readable from both the top and bottom of the monument. It may be that the lower level needs to be above ground to clear nearby trees. John Dooley |
